Frequently Asked Questions

  • When does practice start and what is the practice schedule?

The practice schedule depends on the wrestler’s grade and the schedule is outlined below and is also available on our website calendar at www.bondurantwrestling.wixsite.com/bondurantwrestling

If your wrestler is unable to attend a practice we understand but do ask that when you attend practice, you are on time.

Kindergarten – 2nd grade:

Goals: Wresting practices will be offered to K through 2nd grade kids with no, little, and prior wrestling experience. We will focus on teaching the basic fundamentals of wrestling. This includes learning the proper starting positions as well as basic takedowns, escapes, and pinning combinations as this will prepare wrestlers for youth tournaments.  For wrestlers that want to participate at Super PeeWee State, practices will increase in intensity at the beginning of January. This part of the season is designed for the serious and dedicated youth wrestlers, focusing on preparing for State level tournaments by teaching more advanced techniques and maneuvers.

Season Dates: 10/28/19 to 3/5/20 (Super PeeWee State) or whenever the child wants to stop competing.
Practice: Twice a week, Monday and Thursday 6:15pm to 7:30pm at the Middle School Wrestling room.
Kindergarten will be separated from the 1st and 2nd graders for the first 2-3 weeks until the kindergartens are up to speed with basic moves. The purpose is to not slow down the older kids. After the 2-3 weeks if the Kindergarteners would like to stay (as long as they are listening) until 7:30 they may. Coaches will determine the timeframe.

Includes: Practice twice a week, 1 dual, T-shirt, and entry to 12/8 Bondurant youth tournament
Registration Fee: $60

3rd-6th grade wrestlers:

Goals:  Wrestling practices will be offered to 3rd through 6th grade kids. Practices will start out teaching the fundamentals of wrestling and continue to build each week.  Wrestlers will learn several different takedowns, multiple escape/reversal maneuvers, and different pinning combinations.  This will prepare wrestlers to compete in youth tournaments and teach them the skills to move to the next level. For wrestlers that want to participate at AAU Districts/State, practices will increase in intensity at the beginning of January. This part of the season is designed for the serious and dedicated youth wrestlers, focusing on preparing for District and State level tournaments by teaching more advanced techniques and maneuvers.
Season Dates: 10/28/19 to February 2019 (AAU State Wrestling) or whenever the child wants to stop competing.
Practice: Twice a week, Monday and Thursday evenings, 6:30pm to 8:00pm at the High School Wrestling room.

Includes: Practice twice a week, 1 or 2 duals, T-shirt, and entry to 12/8 Bondurant youth tournament
Registration Fee: $60

  • What if my child isn’t sure about wrestling, am I out the registration fee?

On Monday, October 14th at the High School cafeteria & wrestling room at 6:30 pm, we will offer a free wrestling clinic that will discuss and demonstrate some introductory wrestling. This clinic is intended for new K through 2nd grade wrestlers to aid in determining a child’s interest in wrestling.  After the first week of wrestling practice, we are unable to offer a refund.

  • Good Sportsmanship is our #1 Rule!

We will NOT tolerate misbehavior/horseplay/back talk/bullying in our wrestling room. We ask that everyone listen and pay attention to the coaches during practice.  We are here to learn wrestling techniques and strategies and our time is limited so we need everyone’s attention. Wrestlers who consistently misbehave will be asked to leave the wrestling room or discontinue with the program.

  • AAU Card – Are they required this year?

We have decided to not require AAU Cards this year. Bondurant High School requires liability coverage for the Bondurant Wrestling Club to use their wrestling room and facilities. The Bondurant Wrestling Club has purchased a liability coverage policy to satisfy that requirement.  However, if you wish to take your wrestler to an AAU sanctioned tournament (AAU Districts, Super PeeWee State), you will be responsible for getting the AAU card. You can log on to the AAU Membership site to purchase your Athlete (Individual) AAU Card at https://play.aausports.org/Default

  • Do parents have to stay onsite during practice?

For younger wrestlers (Kindergarten), the preference is that parents stay in the wrestling room as those ages are more comfortable with parents nearby and this can also be helpful to coaches to have parents help in guiding children.

For older ages (grades 1 through 6), you do not have to stay on-site during practice and it can often be beneficial for wrestlers to work with coaches without parents present however, it is important that wrestlers are picked up ON-TIME. In the event of repeated late pick up we may ask that a parent remain on-site during practice or discontinue with the program.

  • Wrestling Room

Street shoes are NOT ALLOWED in the wrestling room.  Non-registered children/siblings are NOT ALLOWED in the wrestling room.  Other than kindergarten parents, parents are NOT ALLOWED in the wrestling room during practice unless coaches ask for participation (see prior question for further details). The room is not large enough to accommodate parent viewing and the kids are more focused when parents aren’t in the room.

  • How long does the season go?

The length of the season is at the discretion of parents with consideration of their child’s interest level in the sport. Keep in mind the intensity level increases at the beginning of January, as this part of the season is designed for the serious and dedicated youth wrestlers, focused on preparing for District and State level tournaments.

  • What equipment is required to wrestle?

Wrestling shoes are required.  Headgear is optional, however strongly encouraged to avoid damage to the wrestler’s ears. A singlet is not required; wrestlers can wrestle in a t-shirt and pair of shorts. We do encourage that the wrestlers wear a singlet or a compression shirt to avoid getting tangled up in a baggy t-shirt.  Most sporting goods stores carry wrestling gear. We have a recycling program for equipment. We offer these items for use during the season and ask that the items be returned at the end of the season so that we can continue to offer a program like this to others. This recycling program helps cut down the initial cost as equipment can get expensive. We can’t guarantee that we’ll have something for everyone, but we try to do what we can to help out.

  • What to bring to practice?

Please have a water bottle. This eliminates having to run to the water fountain all the time.   It is suggested that you may want to bring a change of clothes or a dry/clean shirt to switch into immediately after practice to avoid ringworm, infections, or any other type of mat funk from being attracted. The mats are sanitized prior to each practice however that isn’t a guarantee to avoid your wrestler from picking something up and also need to shower at home immediately following practice.  Also, it is a WISE idea to have a gym bag of some sort to put your wrestler’s items into while practice is taking place. This eliminates having items getting misplaced and kicked around in the hall.

  • Tournament attendance – what is required?

We will have team tournaments (dates to be announced and published to team website).  We encourage each wrestler to be involved.  However, wrestlers can attend as many or as few tournaments as they wish. Parents/Guardians are responsible for registration to tournaments.

Bondurant’s home tournament will be held on Sunday, December 8th.   To be registered for our tournament, please indicate ‘Yes’ on the club online registration form and we will register your wrestler for the tournament on TrackWrestling.

  • Will Bondurant Wrestling Club participate in dual meets again this year?

Yes, we will participate in two types of dual meets, ‘friendly’ and ‘competitive’.

  • Friendly Duals -ALL club wrestlers are invited to attend the ‘friendly dual’. We have our first ‘friendly dual’ scheduled for Tuesday Nov 19th at Bondurant Middle School with Norwalk and Martensdale. All wrestlers that signup (during online registration) will participate and be matched up with kids from the other towns based on grade, weight and skill level. Each wrestler will hopefully get 2 matches.

  • Competitive Duals- Competitive duals have pre-determined weight classes in which Bondurant Wrestling Club will have to fill each weight class. Most of the duals allow K-8th grade wrestlers. The weight classifications are determined by the tournament host and wrestlers will be required to make scratch weight, no exceptions. There are typically 15-18 weight classes ranging from 50 pounds to HWT (235 max). During the dual our wrestlers will compete against kids in the same weight class as them, however it is very likely they won’t be the same age. For example, a 55 pound 2nd grader could compete against a 55 pound 5th grader.  As a club, we plan to attend 1-2 competitive duals this season. Once the dates are determined we will send out a communication via email and ask for response if your wrestler is interested. Please keep in mind when responding to these emails these duals will be very competitive. As a parent it is your responsibility to determine if your wrestler is ready for such an event. It is also your responsibility to determine what weight class you want your wrestler to wrestle. You can discuss the best weight class for your wrestler with the coaches, but ultimately it is the parent’s decision to make. In situations where there are multiple wrestlers at the same weight that wish to participate in the same competitive dual, the coaches will evaluate the situation (considering each wrestlers behavior, attitude, attendance, respect to coaches, etc.) and if necessary a wrestle off for that weight class will occur to determine who will represent Bondurant Wrestling Club. Being on a competitive dual team is a privilege and there is a responsibility from the wrestler and parents to represent our club and community. Our goal is to have our most competitive kids represent the Bondurant Wrestling Club at these duals.

  • Open Sores

If your wrestler has a cut or scrape it needs to be covered with gauze/medical tape/band aid etc. during practice.  If the wrestler has any questionable sores on their skin, they are required to show a coach prior to practice. It is at the coach’s discretion as to whether the child will wrestle at practice. Open sores enable the spread of infections and greatly increase the chances of your child picking up infections.

  • Illness

If your wrestler goes home from school sick or has been out of school due to an illness then we ask that you keep them home and not attend practice either. If you have questions about when your wrestler should return to practice then please speak to a coach or parent board member.

  • Team singlets

We offer a singlet rental program. Rental fee is $15.00 and you can utilize the team singlet throughout the season. We also require a deposit of $60 be paid via check when picking up the singlet. When you return the singlet at the end of the year, we’ll return your check. If your singlet isn’t returned when requested, we will deposit your check so we can purchase another singlet to replace it. Team singlets are not required, but for tournament singlets are strongly suggested whether a team singlet (to help coaches identify our club members) or singlets of your own choosing.

  • Why do I need to provide personal information when registering (e-mail, address, medical)?

Personal information is required for a couple of reasons:

  1. Contact information is required in case of an emergency.   We must have this information available to coaches during practices if an emergency should occur and parents/guardians and/or emergency staff needs to be contacted.

  2. Contact information is also needed for regular communications to parents (often done via e-mail and potentially via texts) as well as to have a back-up method of contacting parents/guardians in the case where they cannot be reached via e-mail.

  • What is the team website and what are other sources of wrestling information?

The Bondurant Wrestling Club website is: www.bondurantwrestling.wixsite.com/bondurantwrestling.The site has a calendar, club contact information, registration link, pictures, tournament results and more.   This site should be used throughout the season as a source for information including updates related to weather-related cancelations.   You can also post pictures from tournaments as well as tournament results.

There are also periodic communications provided via e-mail throughout the year and these are sent from our club e-mail address at bondurantwc@gmail.com..   We send a club e-mail to test addresses just prior to the first practice so if you do not receive an e-mail in late October/early November from our club, please check your spam/junk folders to ensure e-mail from this address is NOT being directed there.   You are welcome to direct questions or concerns regarding Bondurant Wrestling Club, to this e-mail address.

General wrestling tournament information and registrations can also be found on the Predicament website http://www.thepredicament.com/.   This is a great site to go to for local/regional tournaments.

  • What is the Bondurant Wrestling Club Parent Board?

Parent board was new in 2012-2013 and is a group of volunteer parents that work closely with volunteer coaches and parents to effectively manage the club.  The board meets monthly (meeting info available on the website and open to all interested in attending) and input from parents is welcomed.  Bylaws are available on the website for further details about the group and its operations.  If you have interest in becoming a candidate for parent board, please indicate this during registration or contact a board member.
